Is technology taking over our lives?

New research published on the Conrad Electronics Blog indicates that the sheer volume of technology which exists today is causing worrying increases in both stress and anxiety.

The study, conducted by the University of Cambridge, polled 1,300 people in the UK. They were questioned over their use of everything from social networking to use of email, and the results suggest that we are being overwhelmed by technology.

34% of participants between the ages of 25-34 admitted to being overwhelmed by the amount of different devices and gadgets in their lives.

A potentially more intriguing statistic though is that 38% of those questioned between the ages of 10-18 suggested that they too were feeling weary from the effects of too much technology in their lives.

This statistic contradicts the view that the younger generation can handle the various devices which are becoming an inextricable part of modern life. It should also cause alarm for parents of anybody who has children around those ages.

The findings follow hot on the heels of another study earlier this year that claimed Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites can leave a number of frequent users feeling depressed.

This particular study, carried out by Stanford University, suggested that as people only tend to publicise the most positive aspects of their lives on sites such as Facebook it can present a distorted view for those on the outside looking in.

This encourages feelings of depression as their initial view is that their own lives are dull by comparison.

Even though that is something that most people would be able to forget about quite easily, it is also something that many udders would admit to experiencing.

The fact is that technology is playing an increasingly dominant role in the lives of many within modern society. The rigours that go with it are bound to have a negative wearying affect at some point.

Mobile phones, email, Twitter and Facebook are now a huge part of many people’s lives. There are steps you can take to ensure that you do not become overwhelmed by the myriad of devices all around you, but how many people are willing to take those steps?
